Information board about kahikate in White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve
Image: DOC

Enter the strange land of giant moths, plants that sting, Nīkau palms and ancient kahikatea trees. The trees are full of singing birds, the streams are full of water creatures - imagine what it was like when much of New Zealand looked like this.
  • Discover a kingdom of plants in this ancient native forest.
  • Keep an eye out for the giant stinging nettle (ongaonga) − they may have a fierce reputation but they are the exclusive food of the red admiral butterfly.
  • Spot the creatures living in the stream − take a torch to help see them.
