The Pomahaka is a major tributary of the Clutha River holding some good-sized brown trout, sea salmon and perch. This lengthy river in its upper reaches starts as a classic high-country stream passing through some steep sided gorges with deep pools of tannin coloured water. Artificial fly and spinner methods are permitted. There is no size limit for the bag limit of one trout, two salmon for this section of the river (upstream from Park Hill Bridge, Switzers Road).

The season is 1 October to 30 April. You need a fishing licence with a backcountry licence endorsement from Fish & Game to fish this waterway.

The terrain is well suited for horse trekking and is potentially one of the most relaxing ways to fully appreciate the visual features of the Pomahaka Conservation Area landscape.

Several options exist for mountain biking in this area, expect climbs and descents over changeable terrain. Ensure you have a map and a good sense of direction. To reduce the impact on the natural environment it is recommended that mountain bikers stick to the formed farm tracks – though these are limited, there is good access via these to Gem Lake.

There are opportunities for cross country ski touring. Though the terrain may often appear non-threatening compared to that of steeper slopes; this is an exposed alpine area with an unpredictable climate – skiers venturing into this area require good alpine navigational and snow survival skills.
