Dae Van der Maazen, a 37 year old Waikato man, was convicted and fined $2000 by Judge Richard Watson at the Tauranga District court today for illegally applying cyanide baits at the Kaimai Summit near Tauranga.

Samples taken by Department of Conservation (DOC) staff, from four Gray’s beaked whales which stranded and subsequently died at the eastern end of Papamoa beach last Saturday 21 January are being sent to Massey University today for analysis.

Department of Conservation (DOC) staff, supported by local iwi representatives have been working today to collect samples and bury the bodies of four Gray's beaked whales which stranded and subsequently died at the islolated eastern end of Papamoa Beach, near Tauranga.
