Introduction

Kapiti Marine Reserve is popular for its abundant sea life including blue moki, kingfish, seals and dolphins. It's also home for some top dive spots include the Hole-in-the-Wall underwater archway.

The marine reserve was established in 1992 and is 2167 hectares.

Kapiti Marine Reserve is known supports a fascinating mix of marine plant and animal communities that would usually be found in colder or warmer waters, from seals and penguins through to subtropical fishes and sharks.

Kapiti Island and its surrounding waters are noted for strong tidal rips and changeable weather – sea conditions can quickly become treacherous. Obtain an up-to-date marine forecast before boating in the reserve. Launching of boats are only allowed at Waikanae Boating Club and Kapiti Boating Club. Be aware that this is a beach launch and can be tricky launching conditions - 4WD vehicles are necessary. Seeking local advice is recommended if you are not from the area.

Keep your vessel clean and pest free

Kayaking is permitted within the reserve but you cannot land on Kapiti Island.

Be aware that its surrounding waters are noted for strong tidal rips and changeable weather – sea conditions can quickly become treacherous. Get an up-to-date marine forecast before going into the reserve.

Protect our marine reserves
  • No fishing of any kind.
  • Don't take or kill marine life.
  • Don't remove or disturb any marine life or materials.
  • Don't feed fish - it disturbs their natural behaviour.
  • Take care when anchoring to avoid damaging the sea floor.
