Visit the Punanga Manu o Te Anau/Te Anau Bird Sanctuary for a glimpse of the rare, flightless takahē and other birds.
If you have more time and the right skills and gear - there’s plenty of adventure further up the lake. It is the closest town to world-famous Milford Sound (2 hours drive), and the start of the Kepler, Routeburn and Milford Track Great Walks.
Enjoy the spectacular backdrop of Mt Luxmore and the Murchison mountains from town or the lakeside tracks, or from the water on your boat or kayak.
The Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre on Lakefront Drive has all the park information you need, as well as an excellent range of conservation merchandise. Find out about walking tracks and Great Walks, hunting, boating and other activities in the park, natural history, conservation and more.
Te Anau is considered the ‘gateway to Fiordland’ and can be reached by SH6 and SH94 from Queenstown (179 km, 2 hours 20 minutes drive) or SH1 and SH94 from Invercargill (150 km, 2 hours drive). Regular bus services are available from these centres.
The town of Te Anau has full visitor facilities with shops and places to stay.
