Temperatures in Fiordland

In New Zealand, January and February are the warmest months of the year (summer), and July is the coldest (winter). Fiordland in the south is generally colder than the north, but weather varies throughout the region and can change rapidly within a day.

Summer in Fiordland offers the warmest days (e.g. between 10 - 18°C. Winter temperatures (between May and November) can be between 1 - 9°C (example from July), however cold weather can occur at any time of year.

Rain and waterfalls

Thanks to the amount of rain here the Fiordland area has amazing waterfalls and forest for you to enjoy. An average of about 7 metres of rain falls per year, over an average of about 200 rain-days per year. Don’t forget your rain jacket!

The rainfall and unpredictable weather patterns are due the famous ‘Roaring Forties’ westerly air streams. These winds pick up moisture as they cross the Tasman Sea, are pushed up by the mountains then release it as heavy rain in the west and snow at higher levels.

Conditions in the alpine tops

As with alpine areas anywhere in the world, the fabulous views come with exposure to the elements. High and gusty winds, snow are all possible so take care and be aware of the risk of wind chill.

Avalanche risk is high in Fiordland thanks to the steepness of the mountains and the high snowfall. Avalanche risk exists mainly over winter and spring, especially between late August and early November.
