Alpine snow gear list

Introduction

What to take when tramping in alpine areas with snow or ice.

Check gear lists for a range of activities. 

Pack tramping gear

You will need the gear required for overnight and multi-day tramping,

You should also pack

  • Ice axe
  • Crampons (make sure they are the right type for your boot)
  • Helmet
  • Waterproof jacket, pants and gloves
  • Avalanche equipment – transceiver, probe and shovel – with adequate training on how to use them
  • Distress beacon
  • Emergency shelter

You may also need

  • Snow goggles
  • Snow gaiters
  • Poo pot (or other equipment to take your toilet waste away with you)

Packing for glaciers

If glaciation is expected on your route, consider a rope and technical equipment - with adequate training and experience on how to use them.
