Volunteer
At Burwood Takahē Centre
Help our rangers care for the takahē and maintain our 'takahē farm'.
Volunteer work might vary during the year, but generally includes:
- Feeding takahē twice a week (or more often in winter when there is snow). This usually involves changing, cleaning and refilling feed hoppers and water troughs, and general bird observations.
- Inspecting and maintaining pen fences.
- Regular checking and maintenance of predator traps set in and outside the fencelines.
- General maintenance of facilities and equipment.
There may be other projects such as banding, vaccinating birds, and the transfer of birds to or from Burwood to help with.
Requirements
To volunteer at Burwood, you need to commit to a minimum of one week (5-7 days) work.
The work is almost all outdoors and is physical, so you must have a reasonable level of fitness. Volunteers generally work a 6–8 hour day.
