Introduction
DOC is encouraging visitors to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing this summer to use a licensed transport operator.Date: 14 December 2016
Tongariro Alpine Crossing on your bucket list this summer? Enjoy your trip – book ahead and use a licensed transport operator from Whakapapa, National Park Village, Turangi, Taupo and Ohakune.
This season we are expecting our highest ever visitor numbers to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and parking at both car parks is limited. Also, the roads to car parks are unsealed and narrow.
“Our message to visitors is that choosing to travel there with a transport operator will make a huge difference to the quality of your experience and that of others” says Bhrent Guy, Operations Manager, Biodiversity and Community, Tongariro District.
We recommend that visitors travel with licensed transport operators from either Whakapapa, National Park Village, Turangi, Taupo and Ohakune. Traffic management will be in place to help but car parks will fill up quickly. To avoid disappointment using a shuttle is the best way to travel to and from the Tongairio Alpine Crossing.
“This summer we need visitors to use the local transport operators to make the most of their trip, enjoy the walk and don’t worry about parking” says Paul Carr, Operations Manager, Recreation and Safety, Tongariro District.
DOC also takes this opportunity to remind all walkers to be prepared for all weather conditions even in the middle of summer.
