Introduction

May to December: Situated in a picturesque Bay along the Queen Charlotte Drive, this is a popular and well-equipped campsite 14 km out of Picton. Two weeks minimum time commitment.

Momorangi Bay Campground is a serviced family campsite, run by DOC staff, located in a sheltered bay, popular for swimming, boating and fishing. There is a short forest walk and glow worm grotto on site.

Tasks

Your duties will usually take 2-3 hours per day, more when DOC staff are on their days off.

These include:

  • assisting the onsite staff with checking-in and welcoming guests to the campground
  • assisting the cleaning of the facilities each day
  • basic campground maintenance i.e. painting, hedge trimming, when and if required
  • sharing information about the area with visitors
  • providing a presence in the camp when DOC staff are on days off. Guests use online booking to secure their spots, so you will be available to oversee the bookings calendar (full training will be provided).

What we can provide

  • A free powered site for your campervan or tent (or use of small cabin if you do not have your own tent or van).
  • Use of the campsite facilities – cookers/electric stove, hot showers, flush toilets and water.
  • Full training and support from onsite DOC staff at Momorangi.

What to bring

  • Your own vehicle to get to and from the campsite
  • Sleeping bag, sleeping mat, pillow
  • Cooking equipment: pots, plates, utensils, etc.
  • Warm clothing
  • Wet weather gear
  • Insect repellent
  • Sun protection
  • Walking shoes/boots, shoes for around camp
  • Personal toiletries and medication
  • Paddle board/kayak/bike – Momorangi has excellent walking/biking tracks and is located on the waterfront, so there are plenty of opportunities for water activities.

What to expect

If your application is successful DOC staff will give you a full induction, training and support for you to carry out duties on the campground.

Insurance: DOC cannot pay for any medical costs or loss of personal equipment incurred during your stay. If you're an international volunteer we strongly recommend travel insurance.

Food reimbursement

DOC will reimburse volunteer’s food expenses up to $100 per week of camp hosting. You will need to provide grocery receipts to receive payment. It’s a good idea to keep your grocery receipts a week or two before you start.

For volunteers with a NZ bank account, we deposit the money directly into your account after your hosting stint. There is usually a 2 to 3-week processing delay. For those that don’t have a NZ bank account, we can provide you with a FreshChoice grocery voucher.
