Proposal
Pursuant to the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 2008, notice is hereby given that the Department of Conservation proposes to change the name of a scenic reserve in Northland.
This notice advises of the proposal to change the name of Otaika Valley Scenic Reserve to Tiakiriri Kukupa Scenic Reserve.
We seek submissions from any person or organisation wishing to support or object to the proposed name change (noting that this notice relates to the proposed name only).
About the scenic reserve
The scenic reserve is located next to Otaika Valley Road in Northland. The reserve is highlighted in blue on the location plan.
How to make a submission
Any person or organisation may make a submission in writing to the Director-General on the proposal.
Submissions must provide reasons for supporting or objecting to the proposed name change and if an objection is made, then an alternative name proposal may be suggested.
Submissions close Friday 26 July 2024.

What happens next
After considering any submissions received on the proposed name change, and before finally deciding on the name, the Minister of Conservation will refer them to the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) (“the Board”), in accordance with section 16s Reserves Act 1977, in order to be reviewed by the Board under section 27(3) of the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008.
