Introduction

Providing scientific, technical and technological advice for the Convention and its working groups, the intergovernmental scientific advisory body reports to the Conference of Parties.

Article 25 establishes this open-ended intergovernmental scientific advisory body as a subsidiary of the Conference of the Parties (COP).

Its functions include:

  • providing assessments of the status of biological diversity;
  • providing assessments of measures taken in support of the Convention; and
  • responding to questions that the COP may put to it.

The COP decision also defined how the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) carries out its work (Annex 1 of decision IV/16, amended by decision V/20).

Recommendations of the SBSTTA that have been endorsed in full by the COP are regarded as decisions of the COP.
