Introduction

The Conference of Parties developed a plan to work toward a significant reduction in the current rate of biodiversity loss. The review working group has a mandate to consider processes for evaluating, reporting and reviewing implementation.

In 2002, the Conference of Parties (COP) adopted the Strategic Plan, committing to more effective and coherent implementation of the objectives of the Convention. Its aim was to achieve, by 2010, a significant reduction in the current rate of biodiversity loss.

The 2010 target was subsequently endorsed by the World Summit on Sustainable Development in its Plan of Implementation (paragraph 44). In order to achieve this target, the COP established the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention.

The Working Group has a mandate to address a range of implementation-related issues, including progress in implementing the Strategic Plan; impacts and effectiveness of Convention processes; cooperation and stakeholder engagement; monitoring, reporting and evaluation processes; and means of identifying and overcoming obstacles to effective implementation of the Convention.
