Get the right map for your trip

You can get lots of different types of maps for visits to conservation areas.

Short walks and rides: Use the maps in recreation brochures.

Longer day walks and overnight adventures: Carry and use detailed topographic maps. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) produces 1:50,000 scale topographic maps for the whole of New Zealand.

LINZ maps and souvenir planning maps are available from DOC visitor centres nationwide.

Topo50 maps replaced NZMS260 series

In 2009 Topo50 maps replaced LINZ’s 1:50,000 scale NZMS260 series.

The Top50 map series use the New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000) and the New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 (NZTM2000) projection.

This means that the grid co-ordinates (known as eastings and northings) will be different from those on the older NZMS260 maps.

Topo50 and GPS

People using hand-held GPS will need to coordinate their GPS units with Topo50.
