Wetlands invertebrates study

Introduction

This practical activity uses standardised scientific methods to assess the biodiversity value of a stream (or to compare two streams) by identifying the prevalent water invertebrates.

The methods used will vary according to the age of students and at senior levels this activity is appropriate for assessment.

Students will also discuss the broader aspects of the wetland, in particular its birdlife. The activity also discusses ways of protecting waterways.

      Learning objectives

      Students will:

      • appreciate the biodiversity found in a healthy stream
      • understand the value of a wetlands ecosystem
      • identify bird species and behaviour and an appropriate human code of conduct
      • recognise the human impacts on wetlands and braided rivers
      • identify different invertebrate species
      • understand methods of protecting waterways.
