Introduction

You can hunt red deer, fallow deer, goats and pigs in the West Catlins hunting area.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dog access

Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times.

About this hunting block

Waikawa Scenic Reserve and Haldane Scenic Reserve consists of undulating to steep forest clad slopes. Vegetation is regenerating kamahi, podocarp and mixed broad leaved forest species including areas of tree ferns and crown fern.

West MacLennan Forest, which is also known as Forest Range or Mokoreta, is similar in description to Waikawa Scenic Reserve.

Slopedown Conservation Area is made up of several blocks of land and ranges from relatively flat to steep hill side. Vegetation is regenerating kamahi, podocarp and mixed broad leaved forest.

Access

Waikawa Scenic Reserve and Haldane Scenic Reserve are accessed from Tokanui along the Tokanui - Haldine Road.

West Maclennan is accessed by forestry road from Waikawa Valley or east of Wyndam on the south side of Motoreta Valley by forestry road south of Murray Road.

Slopedown Conservation Area access can be gained from Wyndham - Mokoreta Road and Egremont Road.

Red deer - moderate numbers
Fallow deer - low numbers
Goats - moderate numbers
Pigs - low numbers

Dogs

  • Dogs must be registered and are not permitted in huts.
  • When crossing private land, dogs are to be on a leash until well into forest and kept under control.
  • DOC must be notified regarding missing or lost dogs on conservation land.

Hut information

There are no DOC huts available.

If possuming, a permit must be obtained by visiting the DOC Murihiku Office in Invercargill.
