Introduction

You can hunt red deer, fallow deer and pigs in the Caroline Bush and Wadworth scenic reserves.

Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dog access

Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times.

About this hunting block

Caroline Bush Scenic Reserve is approximately 67 ha of beech, podocarp and broadleaved forest on a gentle easterly slope.

Wadworth Scenic Reserve is approximately 41 ha of beech and regenerating broadleaved forest with relatively steep gullies.

Note: Hunting in the Glenure Scenic Reserve is no longer permitted. 

Access

Caroline Bush is split into two blocks. One block has access adjacent to the Dipton-Balfour Road 7 km northeast of Dipton. The second block can be accessed from Bell Road which is across private land.

Wadworth can be accessed from SH6 north of Benmore along Mathews Road and then across private land.

Access which is across private property requires prior permission from the landowners.

Red deer - low numbers
Fallow deer - low numbers
Goats - low numbers

Dogs

  • Dogs must be registered and are not permitted in huts. 
  • When crossing private land, dogs are to be on a leash until well into the forest and kept under control.
  • DOC must be notified regarding missing or lost dogs on conservation land.

Hut information

There are no DOC huts available.

If possuming, a permit must be obtained by visiting the DOC Murihiku Office in Invercargill.
