Predator-proof fence at Panpac Kiwi Crèche
Image: DOC

Behind a predator-proof fence lies an idylic bush clad lake. Go through the ingeniously designed gate, which stops pesky pests sneaking in but still allows for kayaks.
  • Stroll through the reserve, picnic under the shelter or spend some time swimming, fishing or kayaking on Lake Opouahi.
  • Look for volunteers doing health checks on kiwi chicks − it's a chance to see one up close.
  • Explore the nearby Bellbird bush − see if you can find the hidden caves.

Get ready

Download the adventure map (PDF, 1,089K) and check out what you can do.

Be aware that the track beyond the predator proof fence at Lake Opouahi (from the loop around the lake to point 5 on the map) should only be attempted by experienced trampers.

Go and explore

Look out for the Guardian Post when you get there. On it you'll find a special code word - write it down.

Getting there: Opouahi/Panpac Kiwi Crèche is 65 km north of Napier. Just past Tutira, turn off SH 2 onto Matahorua Road. Travel 5.5 km, then turn onto Pohokura Road and follow this for 3.5 km.
