Access

This conservation area covers over 17,000 ha of spectacular sub-alpine landscape. Due to the fragile nature of the area, access needs to be carefully managed.

  1. Public access is available from 1 November to 1 April during the dryer summer months, although the season may open later or be closed earlier in adverse weather and/or road conditions.
  2. Landowner permission, at both entrance and exit points, must be obtained prior to accessing conservation area.
  3. Leave gates as you find them.
  4. The lands bordering the conservation area are working high country stations. Its management welcomes visitors, however, please consider this on your journey and respect livestock and property.

Safety

  1. Check current track and weather conditions before heading out. This is an exposed alpine region; the weather can be unpredictable at any time of year.
  2. Visibility in this area can change very quickly. Ensure you carry a map and GPS or compass with you .
  3. Respect the right of others for the enjoyment of the outdoors. Give way to walkers, horse riders and mountain biker
  4. Ensure you carry all necessary spare equipment
  5. Drive only where permitted; stay on the main tracks. Do not make your own shortcuts or tracks. Avoid widening tracks.
  6. Give way to drivers on the uphill grade.
  7. Know your driving limitations and your vehicles limitations.
  8. A cell phone or radio can be helpful in the event of an accident. Please note, due to unreliable coverage in some areas, cell phones should only be used as a back up option.
  9. Leave intentions with a responsible person.
  10. Ensure you are carrying appropriate safety equipment and are prepared for staying out overnight if necessary.

General

  1. This permit is not transferable and must be carried at all times and be produced on demand. This permit may at any time be cancelled by telephone or by public notice issued by radio or published in a newspaper of the district.
  2. In consideration for being given access to 4WD on Public Conservation Land, the holder of this permit agrees that they do so entirely at their own risk.
  3. The Department of Conservation does not accept any liability for any loss or damage suffered by any person for the time being situated on its land pursuant to this permit.
  4. If you see any suspicious activities within the Public Conservation Land please notify the Mt Aspiring National Park visitor centre (+ 64 3 443 7660)
  5. Failure to comply with the condition of this permit will result in it being terminated and may result in no further permit being issued. Random checks by departmental staff will be undertaken.

Your 4WD and the environment

  1. Ensure the laws and regulations covering recreation vehicles are adhered to.
  2. Always thoroughly clean your vehicle before trips to avoid spreading weeds and plant and animal diseases.
  3. Take all your rubbish with you.
  4. We ask every vehicle owner to behave responsibly and with regard to the fragility of the natural environment and the needs and rights of others.
