Bookings

All huts and campsites on the Heaphy Track must be booked in advance all year round.

If you don’t have a valid booking for your stay, you may be charged a penalty, or turned away if the hut/campsite is full.

How to book the Heaphy Track from either end

The Heaphy Track is partially closed and it is not possible to walk end to end. The track is open at either end for 'in and out' walks, and all huts are open and bookable.

There are now two ways to book the Heaphy Track.

Walking from the Golden Bay end, use the Great Walks online booking system

The track between Brown Hut and James Mackay Hut is open and in good condition. Visitors can book:

  • Aorere Shelter Campsite
  • Brown Hut and Campsite
  • Perry Saddle Hut and Campsite
  • Gouland Downs Hut and Campsite
  • Saxon Hut and Campsite
  • James Mackay Hut and Campsite.

Walking from the West Coast end, use the Campsites and huts online booking system

The track between Kohaihai and Heaphy Hut is open and in good condition. Visitors can book:

  • Heaphy Hut and Campsite
  • Katipo Creek Shelter Campsite
  • Scotts Beach Campsite.

The separate booking systems will continue for the next season, which opens on 1 July 2022.

The earliest bookings that can be made for through trips on the full track are for 1 May 2023. Note this is a provisional date for reopening, set this far out to avoid bookings having to be cancelled or modified.

As soon as there is an expected date for the full track to open, the booking system and website information will be updated to reflect this.

Bookings are open for the 2022/23 season.
