Introduction

Information about fees, bookings and associated conditions for the Heaphy Track.

Fees

Fees are charged per person, per night to stay in huts and campsites on the Heaphy Track. There are no fees to complete a day walk on the track or for entry into the Kahurangi National Park.

Hut fees

In the Great Walks season (1 October – 30 April)

New Zealand citizens and those ordinarily resident in New Zealand*:

  • Adult (18+ years): $37 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): free but booking still required

International visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $56 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): $28 per person, per night

Proof of eligibility is required for the New Zealand rate.

1 May – 30 June and September

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $32 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): free
1 July – 31 August

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $26 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): free

Campsite fees

In the Great Walks season (1 October – 30 April)

New Zealand citizens and those ordinarily resident in New Zealand*:

  • Adult (18+ years): $16 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): free but booking still required

International visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $24 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): $12 per person, per night

Bookings

All huts and campsites on the Heaphy Track must be booked in advance all year round.

If you don’t have a valid booking for your stay, you may be charged a penalty, or turned away if the hut/campsite is full.

The Heaphy Track is expected to open end to end from 19 October 2023.

To book walk dates up to 19 October 2023

The Heaphy Track is partially closed and it is not possible to walk end to end. The track is open at either end for ‘in and out’ walks, and all huts are open and bookable.

Walking from the Golden Bay end, use the Great Walks online booking system

The track between Brown Hut and James Mackay Hut is open and in good condition. Visitors can book:

  • Aorere Shelter Campsite
  • Brown Hut and Campsite
  • Perry Saddle Hut and Campsite
  • Gouland Downs Hut and Campsite
  • Saxon Hut and Campsite
  • James Mackay Hut and Campsite. 

Walking from the West Coast end, use the Campsites and huts online booking system

The track between Kohaihai and Heaphy Hut is open and in good condition. Visitors can book: 

  • Heaphy Hut and Campsite
  • Katipo Creek Shelter Campsite
  • Scotts Beach Campsite.

Bookings are open for the 2023/24 season.
