DOC has an agreement with the owner of Big Hill Station for limited access to cross the farm. 4WD is required. As part of the agreement, DOC must issue a permit to anyone using the easement.
2026/27 access season

Access through Big Hill Station is closed from August to October each year for farming operations.
How to apply
Permits will be allocated through a ballot process due to limited availability.
- Applications open at 9.30 am on 7 August 2026.
- Applications close at 9.30 am on 21 September 2026.
- Applications must be submitted using the online application form.
- Successful applicants will be allocated a permit week and sent permit information by email.
- Applicants who are not allocated a permit may be contacted if a permit becomes available due to a cancellation.
Permit rules
- Permits are limited to two parties per week.
- A permit covers the party leader and up to four additional party members.
- Permits are valid for one week, from Friday to Thursday.
- One vehicle is permitted per party.
- The permit allows one trip in and one trip out during the allocated week.
- To ensure fair access, each person may only receive one permit per season, either as a party leader or party member.
- The party leader should be the owner of the vehicle being used.
Entry times
Access through Big Hill Station is permitted only during the following entry windows:
- Friday: 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm
- Saturday: 7.30 am to 8.30 am
Access through Big Hill Station is closed from August to October for farming operations.
Permit holders
Successful applicants will receive their permit electronically. Permit holders must be able to present a copy of their permit if requested.
The list of permit holders will be shared with Big Hill Station once permits have been issued.
