Wander through beech forest and along the sandy foreshore of Milford Sound, and enjoy fabulous views of Mitre Peak - it's an easy, short walk that's great for kids.

This is an easy loop walk suited to all ages and accessible to wheelchairs.

Learn about the area through the interpretation panels. Watch boats taking visitors out on cruises on Milford Sound. Some of the best views of Mitre Peak are from this walk.

This walk begins from the main visitor carpark at Milford Sound, Fiordland, at the end of the Milford Road.

Milford Sound is 120 km from Te Anau along the Milford Road (SH94).

There may be a lot of sandflies on this walk.

Tsunami risk at Milford Sound

There can be large tsunamis in Piopiotahi Milford Sound.

A big earthquake could cause a landslide into the fiord, quickly creating a huge tsunami. This would leave little time and limited options for people to escape.

If there is strong earthquake shaking, unusual ocean behaviour or noise, move to high ground and/or inland. Do not wait for official warnings.
