Walkway into The River Walk Visitor Centre

Introduction

Check out what you can see at The River Walk Visitor Centre.

The interior of the visitor centre mimics the path of a river as it winds its way past rocks and boulders, with each turn of the river providing something new to see. As visitors walk through the centre each new display offers a different learning experience.

The centre focuses on examining the role of freshwater in our daily lives, and its value as both a commercial and recreational resource. Many displays in the centre are designed to make visitors think about water and its use, and how we as a society must manage competing demands for such a scarce and valuable commodity.

The centre also has a particular focus on the Taupō fishery, and offers insights into its history, current management and future challenges. Part of this is a fantastic historic collection of antique cane rods and an impressive display of reels, some dating back to the 1800s. The Amos-Milner library holds a collection of rare and hard to find fishing books, diaries and literature, a must visit for the fishing boffins!

The River Walk Visitor Centre is the result of hard work by the Tongariro National Trout Centre Society and the Department of Conservation, who shared a vision to create an educational facility that would be an excellent addition to the existing complex.
