A fine example of the diverse native forest once found on the Canterbury Plains, the walk passes through mixed tawhai/podocarp forest, including black beech, rimu, kahikatea, and mataī.
For the first 400 m the track climbs up to a look-out over the Grey River. It is then relatively flat as it leads back to the road. After crossing the road the track loops back to come out at the road again by the picnic area.
The track starts at the Grey River picnic area.
From Amberley, follow Douglas Road, then Cramptons Bush Road until the road reaches the Lake Janet picnic area (17 km from Amberley). Turn left into Mount Grey Road, then right into Okuku Road to reach the Grey River picnic area (3.5 km from the the Lake Janet picnic area).
