You can visit:
- Tauwhare Pā Scenic Reserve, one of the oldest pā sites in New Zealand
- Ohope Scenic Reserve, a coastal reserve that includes one of New Zealand's largest pohutakawa forests
- Moutohorā (Whale Island) Wildlife Management Reserve for endangered birds and plants. You need a permit to visit the island.
They are all managed by Te Tapatoru ā Toi.
Whakatāne is a 1 hour 15 minute drive from Rotorua or Tauranga.
In Whakatāne, kiwi are literally in residents' backyards. You can walk off the pavement into the bush and be in kiwi territory. Because of this Whakatāne is the Kiwi Capital of the World.
With help from the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust, the Whakatāne Kiwi Project, and the community, kiwi in the Whakatāne District are prospering.
