Waitengaue Track

Located in Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park in the Bay of Plenty region

Enjoy walking along the former Waitengaue bush tramway on this track that takes you to Waitawheta Hut.

From Woodland Road, the track follows the fence line and crosses Wairoa Stream. At the next junction, take the Waitengaue Track westwards before crossing the Waitengaue Stream twice.

The track then follows the river and a side creek before climbing over a saddle. The Waitengaue Track continues along the tramway with a river crossing and then follows a tributary.

After crossing a steep saddle, the track descends into the Waitawheta valley. Turn right at the junction and walk 100 m to another junction. The hut is 100 m up from here.

Waitengaue Track begins on Woodland Road, off SH2 north of Katikati.

You must be well prepared when tramping on conservation land, especially on the longer day walks.  Ensure you have strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen.

Consult a topographic map.

Mountain biking is not permitted.

Stay safe when crossing rivers

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers, know how to cross safely and be prepared for if you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river is flooded, you cannot find safe entry and exit points or are unsure it’s safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.
