Rogue fur seal disrupts Wellingtonian’s Wednesday commute
Introduction
A New Zealand fur seal/kekeno on railway tracks near Ngauranga, Wellington, caused considerable delays for commuters in the country’s capital this morning.Date: 16 October 2024
Although the loose seal caused issues for public transport, many people were more concerned with the welfare of the animal, with multiple calls to DOC’s 0800 DOC HOT line reporting the seal.
"This was a sub-adult fur seal, which isn't an unusual sight around Wellington,” says David Moss, DOC Ranger Biodiversity. "However, it was quite skinny, and didn't seem fazed by its predicament, which could be signs of fatigue."
David says it's important in situations like this for people to call DOC, and not try to move the animal themselves.
"DOC rangers are trained in managing these situations in a way which keeps both people and animals safe," says David.
"In recent years, seals have turned up in several unusual places across New Zealand, including fish and chip shops, hardware stores, and even golf courses.
“Kekeno are cute, but they can give a serious bite, even when not in top condition, so we're really grateful we were called in the first instance."
The seal didn't need to catch the train in the end, as DOC rangers gave it a ride to Wellington's south coast, where it was safely released away from people and dogs.
