Introduction

A successful Conservation Week in the Waikato finishes on a high this weekend by celebrating women’s action in the environment at Hine e Hine in Hamilton.

Date:  19 September 2019

This Sunday 22 September Go Eco and the Meteor Theatre are hosting Hine e Hine, a celebration of women and the environment.  Attended by Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage, the event will include a panel of women who will discuss their environmental action and how we can restore Waikato natural abundance.

Department of Conservation rangers will run a weed workshop and other workshops will feature Natural Walking, rongoa specialists, weavers, forest rangers, restoration experts, eco warriors and sustainable business leaders.

In other Conservation Week events Hamilton locals get the chance to go batty with the Waikato Biodiversity Forum Bat workshop Why Bats are Cool on this Friday 20th September.  Bat experts will share information about long-tailed bats living in Hamilton and people can check out the bat displays at the Waikato Museum.

This year the focus of Conservation Week has been on tamariki (children) and getting them and their families out into nature. Several schools near Lake Whangape will be joining DOC, Waikato Tainui, Waikato Regional Council and a local farmer to plant 6000 trees.

Other events have seen conservation dogs, Maia and Sassy helping share conservation messages at Waiwhakareke Schools Day in Hamilton, and a Te Pahu bike and weed event where families biked and weeded their way along the Nikau Walkway up to the Kaniwhaniwha Campground and back for a barbeque and cake.

“New Zealand’s wildlife is still in crisis with more than 4,000 of our native animals and plants threatened or at risk. This Conservation Week we want you to join us and do something, whether big or small to create change”, says Ray Scrimgeour Operations manager for the Waikato District.
