Predator Free 2050

Introduction

Predator Free 2050 is working towards an Aotearoa where our native species are safe from extinction and thrive alongside us – and everyone has a role to play.

Imagine an Aotearoa New Zealand where unique native birds, bats, lizards, frogs and plants all thrive alongside us. That’s why Predator Free 2050 is working towards eradication of three of our most damaging predators – rats, stoats, and possums – and everyone has a role to play. Introduced predators kill an estimated 25 million native birds each year. And we have one of the highest proportions of native species at risk of extinction in the world.

People across New Zealand are taking action for nature – backyard trapping, planting natives, volunteering and donating – and making huge progress.

Thanks to Government investment, the national Predator Free 2050 programme brings together the knowledge of iwi and hapū, NGOs, businesses, government, scientists and communities. The programme is guided by a shared strategy and led by DOC. Together, our work involves:

  • innovating new tools and investing in science research to achieve PF2050
  • protecting native species through predator control across millions of hectares and many projects
  • supporting and empowering people and communities
  • developing a clear and evidence-based plan to unlock eradication in the future.
