Introduction

DOC has updated its accommodation pricing for the 2023/24 booking year (1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024).

For this round of pricing reviews, DOC has mostly focused on huts while introducing some new approaches to improve cost recovery, better reflect the value of facilities and help regulate demand for popular places. The changes are listed below.

Huts

As part of DOC’s regular price reviews, there will be some changes to hut prices for the upcoming booking season. The new prices are based on cost-inflation adjustments, other not for profit hut operators, and high-demand to better reflect the value of the experience and assist with improving costs recovery from users of the facilities.

Standard huts

Standard category hut fees are increasing to keep fees relevant to increasing costs, more closely aligns prices to equivalent non-commercial huts and will improve cost recovery. It also aligns with the current nightly fee for standard campsites.

Seasonal pricing will be removed at the below huts and will have year-round pricing of $25 per adult based on the serviced hut category.

Weekend pricing

After two years of weekend pricing applied in some DOC huts, recent analysis has shown huts with weekend pricing benefitted from demand shifting to weekdays and sustained high use across all associated analysis. Weekend pricing will continue at huts with existing weekend prices at a $5 premium above the category fee and extended to two additional huts on Saturday nights.

Youth category changes

“Child/youth” ages will be defined as 5 to 17 across the two DOC facility types (huts and campsites) and passes (backcountry hut pass and campsite pass). This simplifies age brackets across the huts and campsites and their respective user groups.

Backcountry hut pass

Fee updates are applied to the Backcountry Hut Pass (BCHP) factoring the increases in hut pricing and inflation. The new prices for the BCHP still offer good value due to its extensive hut coverage and ease of use allowing on-line purchases. There are no changes in the list of huts where the pass could be used.

Hut tickets – updated prices and expiry dates

Hut tickets are repriced to hut category fees, with the introduction of a new hut ticket to cover youth fees for serviced huts. Expiration dates will also be added in the new hut tickets sold beginning 1 July to allow the Department better monitoring of hut tickets in circulation. From 1 July, hut tickets sold will be eligible for use within 1 year from date of purchase.
