What's the course about?
It explains some of the principles behind collecting data and doing field observations (such as, why it’s not helpful to leave field notes in your notebook). Practical tips are also provided.
With field work it is very important to be prepared and know how to use your equipment so you get the most out of your time.
When doing inventory and monitoring work, it is important that data collected in the field is consistent, whether it’s collected in Owaka or Ohope. Field staff are the first and most vital link in this chain. If the information isn’t right when it’s collected, nothing else in the system will work effectively. Everything depends on the data.
The course takes about 2 hours to complete, and provides information on:
- Using essential terms, concepts and tools
- Understanding human perception
- Preparation before heading out into the field
- Issues field observers face in the field

Anyone who works or wants to work or volunteer in conservation, including:
- Regional Council staff
- Volunteers
- Members of community groups/Trusts/funding recipients
