This application is notified under section 17SC of the Conservation Act 1987. The Department has received an application from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency for gravel extraction within the Marginal Strip at Whitestone River Bridge SH94.

Summary of proposal: Waka Kotahi propose to extract gravel from the bed of the Whitestone River, in any aggraded area within an area 350 m upstream and 380 m downstream of the centreline of the Whitestone River (SH94) bridge. The intent of the proposed gravel extraction activity is to protect the bridge from flooding and damage from erosion that results from ongoing bed aggradation.

  1. DOC will analyse and consider all submissions.
  2. A hearing will be held if there have been requests to be heard by the Director-General If you have expressed an interest in presenting your submission at a hearing, you'll be contacted by DOC regarding this.
  3. DOC will analyse and consider information raised at the hearing if a hearing occurred.
  4. DOC will make a recommendation to the Minister of Conservation.
  5. The Minister of Conservation will make a decision on the application.
