On the corner of The Strand and Pitt Street, Russell, Bay of Islands. Requesting a lease over a building previously used as a DOC visitor centre and car park area for their marae and other facilities.
Public conservation land: Russell Park Headquarters Government Purpose Reserve and Pitt Street Recreation Reserve.
Summary of proposal
The property has been used as a marae by the Kororareka Marae Society for the past eight years and it wishes to continue this use.
As per the application, the purposes of the Society are:
- To provide a central community centre and facilitate for local persons and Maori.
- To practice and promote Tikanga Maori and other cultural teachings.
- To act in a community support capacity.
