Whitebait spawning in Christchurch has declined recently with changes to the river banks and vegetation, further impacted by damage and a shift in the saltwater wedge caused by the earthquakes. The project is in partnership with Ngāi Tahu, Whaka Inaka to help improve mahinga kai values of the rivers, being a priority concern in the earthquake recovery process and a key natural resource for the local community. |

The process of ecological restoration includes re-vegetation of selected terrestrial, riparian and wetland habitats. Sherwood School are actively involved in all aspects of the restoration with the goal of the shadehouse to grow trees for the re-vegetation and teach the kids how to collect seed, grow and plant trees. |

The current aim is to refocus the longer-term objectives for restoration and conservation goals, to determine how future work will best benefit, and contribute towards national conservation objectives. Another key aim is to provide a platform to connect the community to the conservation outcomes of the restoration work occurring at Pukaha, inspiring future community involvement and interest. |

Landowners, community and local hapū will join forces to consolidate conservation efforts with the vision to create a healthy functioning ecosystem at Lake Whatumā, that is appreciated and valued jointly by the whole community. |
Lower North Island | Dianne Gregory-Hunt | Establishing parea on Pitt Island | 36,120.00 | Being a large fruit eating bird, parea were an important part of the forests of Pitt Island however, due to habitat deteriotion they disappeared from Pitt in the early 1900's. Since that time significant areas of the forest have been protected and are regenerating. This project aims to transfer juvenile parea over two seasons, giving them a foot hold on Pitt Island to develop a self-sustaining population. |

Lower North Island | Nadine Lanauze | Royal albatross attraction | 7,200.00 | Royal albatross are largely restricted to the Chatham Islands for breeding however the birds have been significantly impacted by major storm events which strip the islands of soil and vegetation, greatly reducing breeding success. This project aims to utilise acoustic attraction methodology to attempt to establish a breeding colony of Royal albatross at the robust Far Point site on Pitt Island, to help ensure the long term security for the species. |
Lower North Island | Tutira Partnership | Waikopiro Restoration Project | 35,950.00 | Undertaking restoration work on the 45 ha that makes up the Waikopiro Reserve which is prone to severe erosion causing major sediment loading to the lakes. This project aims to remove weed species and replant the reserve with natives consistent with plants already in the area. In addition the reserve will be fenced and eventually covenanted preserving it for future generations. |
