The national park is deliberately undeveloped in the backcountry to retain its natural and wild character. It has many huts and tramping options, as well as some very popular day and short walks. Because of this lack of development, a higher level of backcountry experience is recommended on the multi day tramps, with navigation and river crossing skills required.
Our focus is on safety in the outdoors, as well as giving information about the most famous residents: kea and kiwi, and the threats to their existence.
