Tips: how to write a CV and cover letter

All applications are treated as confidential.

Shortlisting

We'll email or call you within 10 working days of the advertisement's closing date. You can also track your application online.

The interview

We use behavioural interviews, usually with three or four people on the panel.

Tips: how to prepare for an interview

Whānau (family) support interviews are available for all applicants.

You might be asked to demonstrate your skills, and you might meet the team you would be working with. We'll let you know before the interview.

Reference and other checks

If we decide to take your application further, we’ll contact your referees.

If you're applying for a position which requires field work or regular driving, you'll be required to take a pre-employment drug test. Depending on the role, you might also have to complete a police or security clearance and a health assessment. We'll tell you about any required tests as soon as we can.

DOC is an alcohol and drug free workplace. For many roles, you'll be required to undertake a pre-employment drug test. A health assessment, police and security checks may be required depending on the role.

Offer of employment

If you’re our successful applicant, we’ll make you an offer of employment.

We’re required to notify all our appointments on our intranet if the appointment is permanent or longer than six months. The provisional appointment period is 14 days. If there are no successful appointment reviews, you'll receive a letter confirming your appointment.

All appointments are made subject to the Public Service Act.

Visas and international applicants

We consider any international applicant who holds a valid visa entitling them to work in New Zealand – where the duration of the work is covered by the duration of the visa.

If we're seeking to recruit internationally, we'll usually say so in the advertisement. As a public sector employer, Te Papa Atawhai has an obligation to fill any vacancy with a qualified applicant who has the right to work in New Zealand.

However, if there are no suitably qualified domestic candidates, DOC has 'Accredited Employer' status which allows us to recruit overseas applicants if applicable criteria are met. For more information on the Accredited Employer Work Visa scheme, see the Immigration NZ website.

Skills shortage areas include certain IT roles, specialised Scientists, Senior Technical Planners and Finance professionals.
