Introduction

The Conference of Parties is the governing body of the Convention.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the Convention on Biological Diversity, advancing the Convention’s objectives through the decisions it takes at its periodic meetings.

Successive COPs since the first one in 1994 have resulted in a strategic plan and a number of thematic work programmes, identifying a series of key cross-cutting issues relevant to all of them.

The current Strategic Plan covers the period 2011-2020 and is based on the longer-term programmes of work of the COP and the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA). It contains a set of operational goals relating to the three main areas of work:

  • the thematic programmes,
  • cross-cutting issues and initiatives, and
  • implementation of the Convention.
