Introduction

If you are hunting with a firearm you need a valid firearms licence to get a hunting permit. Find out how to get a NZ firearms licence.

To get a DOC hunting permit to hunt on public conservation land with a firearm, you need either:

a valid New Zealand firearms licence, or
to be under the immediate supervision of someone with a valid New Zealand firearms licence. See Section 2 of the Firearms Safety Code.

When hunting under immediate supervision of a licence holder:

only one firearm is permitted between the supervisor and the shooter
each person requires a hunting permit.
